RELATIONSHIPS AND HEALTH EDUCATION

At Upper Horfield, we aim to prepare our children for life, helping them really know and value who they truly are and understand how they relate to other people in this ever-changing world. We understand how P.S.H.E. underpins learning, mental health and life chances.

Our P.S.H.E. scheme of learning uses the highly effective JIGSAW programme.

Your Guide to

Personal, Social, Health Education...Health Education...Relationships Education...Relationships and Sex Education

Primary schools are not required to teach sex education. The Department of Education recommends that primary schools should have a sex education programme tailored to the age and the physical and emotional maturity of the pupils.

At Upper Horfield, we have chosen to teach some aspects of sex education,  which aren't included in the national curriculum for science, to meet the needs of our pupils. This is done in an age appropriate way and is sensitive to the children's physical and emotional maturity. This will usually happen in term 6. Parents and carers are invited to read the information about what is taught and to ask us any questions before these lessons are delivered.

I would also recommend that you read the JIGSAW guide for parents at:

https:www.jigsawpshe.com/information-for-parents-and-carers/

Parents and carers have the right to withdraw from any sex education that primary schools choose to teach. If you are considering withdrawing your child from these lessons, please come and discuss this with me or their class teacher before writing directly to me.
